    The Techshop Self Help Checklist

  • Reboot your computer - As a general procedure, we recommend that you get in the habit of rebooting your computer at least once a day. Simply close all programs, click on the Start symbol in the lower left-hand corner, and then click on the Restart symbol on the screen. This is also an excellent procedure to follow if your computer is not performing correctly.

  • Unresponsive Program(s) - If you have programs that are locked up on your screen and nothing is happening with them and you can't close them, reduce them or close them. Hold down "ctrl" and "alt" and the "delete" key, all at the same time. This will bring up the Task Manager Window and you can shutdown any programs that are not responding. It may take several attempts to get the computer to respond but this trick usually works and will enable you to close out the program(s) that is(are) no longer responding, and reboot.

  • Frozen Computer - If your computer is jammed or frozen and neither your keyboard nor mouse will respond, and you can't even shut your computer down, here is what you can do: push the reset button which is usually located on the front of the computer near the power button. If that is not available, or does not work, turn the power off, wait about 30 seconds, and then turn the power back on. If a normal “push” of the power button does not work, hold the power button down for a count of seven (7) seconds and it should shut down.

  • Update Windows - Do your Windows operating system updates on a regular basis; you could also schedule them to be done automatically at least once a week. To do so, open Internet Explorer, go to Tools Menu, and click on Windows Updates. At least do the critical updates, as this will protect you against most viruses and will keep your Windows up to date.

  • Update your anti-virus regularly - Do your antivirus updates on a regular basis you could also schedule them to be done automatically at least once a week. Open your antivirus program and look for live update or auto update, click and run it. This will make sure that your computer is protected against the latest viruses.

  • Scan for Virus's and Spyware Regularly - Open you antivirus program by going to Start, All Programs, and click on the icon of your antivirus program. Look for full scan, the only drive you have to scan is your booting drive, which is normally drive C:. Put a checkmark beside it and click Scan. This operation will scan your Hard Drive to find if you have any viruses or if your computer is virus free. Run your antivirus program on a regular basis; you can schedule it to be done at least once a week.

  • Clean your startup folder - Click on Start, go to Programs, go to Startup. Locate any software that is listed that does not need to start up automatically when the computer starts up, right click on that program and delete.
